Types of Cargo
Live Animals

Live animals require special handling since, due to their condition, much time cannot be taken during departure, travel, and arrival.

  • Export/import permits
  • Zoo sanitary certification for delivery
  • Veterinary examinations
  • Letter from the zoo technician/Veterinarian who attends the animals (health certificate).
  • In the case of live dogs, a vaccination certification is required and if it weighs more than ten (10) kgs. a sedative will have to be administered
  • Requirements, prohibitions or restrictions for changing planes
  • Food foreseen for the animal

Such regulations are subject to frequent modifications and depend on the species that is being transported. Therefore, the shipper will obtain requirements that are in force from the local Consulate or the national authority concerned.

Regulations for Live Animals
The requirements, established by IATA, for transporting live animals by air are the following:
  • Animals must be in good health and be in well enough conditions to arrive to its final destination.
  • Packing must be clean and spill and leak proof in order to allow the animal’s safe handling.
  • Additional items, such as food, accompanying the trip must be included in the weight subject to charges.
  • A space reservation must be confirmed in the flight and possible connecting flights until the airport of destination.
  • Live animals must not be mixed with other merchandise.
  • As a general rule, sanitary documents and vaccination certifications against hydrophobia are needed.
